The church bought the statue, with the intention of thereby increasing offerings towards the cost of building, and on 18th June 1377 it was placed on the high altar. Since then the church has been known as Madonna dell'Orto. Following a serious subsidence in the foundations at the North end of the church the order were given 200 ducats to rebuild.. The Church is built on the homonymous square, on the northern side of the Cannaregio quarter. It was founded in 1350 by the order of "Umiliati" and it is dedicated to God, the Virgin Mary and St. Christopher (protector of Travellers and ferry sailors).
